The Winter Spectacular

The Winter Spectacular

February 19th, 2022

The Winter Spectacular is a longtime EBT tradition, allowing visitors the opportunity to watch the railroad come to life in an otherwise quiet season. Visitors enjoy unique excursions with some of the railroad’s most rare equipment, photography sessions, specialty tours, and more!

Join us on February 18th and 19th for the second Winter Spectacular hosted by the EBT Foundation. This year, we will feature rides on the M-1 gasoline-electric motorcar, specialized tours of the railroad’s roundhouse and station, as well as an evening photo session and fundraiser movie night. Rides will also be available at the Rockhill Trolley Museum on a wide variety of equipment from their collection. It is sure to be a weekend of winter railroading that you won’t want to miss!

Winter Train Special Event

The M-1 is a gas-electric self-propelled motorcar assembled by the EBT’s shops in 1926. Designed as a kit from Westinghouse and Brill, the M-1 is one of the most one-of-a-kind experiences at the East Broad Top. Nowhere else can you ride a narrow-gauge gasoline-electric motorcar assembled and operating on the same right-of-way that it was built for. Passengers can choose seats aboard the M-1 itself or a trailing caboose. The M-1 and caboose are both heated, though we still recommend passengers dress for the weather and wear warm, close-toed shoes.

Departures:

10:00am • 11:30am

Train in the snow

Built from scratch by the EBT’s shops, the M-3 is one of the most unique pieces of equipment in the railroad’s roster. Seating only 5 passengers plus the motorman, the M-3 will make several departures to Colgate Grove. The M-3 is not heated; we recommend guests dress accordingly.

Shop Tours in Roundhouse

Take a rare behind-the-scenes look at our restoration effort guided by the EBT Foundation’s Master Mechanic, Dave Domitrovich. This two-hour tour will take visitors into the railroad’s historic roundhouse for a robust discussion about our wide variety of narrow-gauge locomotives and rolling stock, current progress on our restoration efforts, and insights into what we’ve learned throughout the process. All visitors must sign a liability release form. Close-toed shoes are required. Photography and videography during this tour is strictly prohibited.

EBT Station

The Orbisonia Station, constructed in 1906, is a truly special building… full of stories and history around every corner. Join our General Manager as he guides you on a one-hour tour highlighting areas usually restricted to the public, including the railroad’s General Offices, Boardroom, Engineering Office… and a glimpse inside the station’s two-story brick and cement vault, which houses the company archives. Due to the historic nature of the building, this tour is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors will need to climb several flights of steep stairs to access most areas on the tour. Photography and videography during this tour is strictly prohibited.

Archives program Julie

One of the most ambitious joint projects of the EBT Foundation and the Friends of the East Broad Top is creating and developing an Archives and Special Collections program to manage the railroad’s extensive amount of documents pertaining to the construction and operation and overall history of the EBT.
Join us for an evening celebration of that program, including a hearty dinner alongside presentations from our archivist and vintage films from the EBT’s common carrier era presented by Jeff Pontius.
